In some cases, a tenant will first pay rent to a landlord and then buy the freehold of the property bit by bit.

There is a government Rent-to-Buy scheme that was introduced to help first-time buyers who cannot afford to buy a low-cost home, providing them with a cheap loan to facilitate the process.
