Building regulations

These are a set of rules to ensure that any new-build properties or alterations such as extensions are carried out to certain standards, for example linked to construction quality and energy conservation.

They are designed to ensure that buildings are structurally stable, weather resistant, safe in the event of a fire, have appropriate insulation and ventilation, and (where appropriate) are accessible.

If you are planning to do work on a property you are buying, you will need to make sure this complies with the Building Regulations. Building regulations approval is required before major work starts, and can be obtained from your local authority or council.
