Major investment in modular homes to offer housing supply solution

Modular homes look the way ahead for a quick and state-of-the-art solution to the housing supply issue. Financial services giant Legal & General is to build up to 3,000 modular homes every year at its Leeds factory.

And online retail behemoth Amazon is investing millions of dollars in a US firm that makes prefabricated homes.

A BBC video demonstrates how the production line at the Legal & General factory in Selby, near Leeds, manufactures modular homes using precision engineering powered by the most up-to-date technology, materials and skills.

Great for the environment

Accuracy of build is crucial to ensure each home is made to specific requirements. Legal & General says: “Our Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) approach enables high-volume production of affordable, high performance homes that are comfortable to live in, efficient to maintain and great for the environment.”

Meanwhile, in California, the Amazon Alexa Fund is investing in Plant Prefab, a startup based in Rialto that uses smart home technology, sustainable materials and building practices to create its prefabricated homes.

The Alexa Fund has $100 million to invest in startups, particularly those using voice technology.

Paul Bernard, director of the Alexa Fund, said: “Plant Prefab is a leader in home design and an emerging, innovative player in home manufacturing. We’re thrilled to support them as they make sustainable, connected homes more accessible to customers and developers.”

Advantage over traditional methods

Modular homes have a distinct advantage over those built using traditional methods. They are constructed in climate-controlled factory conditions, ensuring the materials are not exposed to the elements while awaiting construction.

And they are delivered when the builders are ready to put each element of the property together, meaning the factory can work to specific deadlines for delivery.
